Kudos to Sonia, Singh - Bhandaru Srinivasrao (I.I.S)

Last week, the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre has announced a 14-member National Advisory Council. Significantly, for the first time, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and the UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, seems to have taken utmost care to ensure nominating only apolitical personalities with excellent professional and academic track records.

Does the ‘realization’ have come among the political parties, especially the Indian National Congress, while choosing people for such an important panel? Has the ‘mind set’ of Congress leadership changed for good?

The members of the high-profile NAC include eminent scientists, academics, intellectuals and civil society activists. While four members of the previous NAC -- Aruna Roy, Jean Dreze, N.C. Saxena and A.K. Shiva Kumar - have been re-nominated to the panel, the rest are new faces.
The new names include agriculture scientist M.S. Swaminathan, technocrat V. Krishnamurthy, also a member of Planning Commission, economist Narendra Jadhav, Mirai Chatterjee, coordinator of social security at NGO SEWA, civil rights activist Farah Naqvi, vice-chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Pramod Tandon, and former IAS officer and social activist Harsh Mander.

Ram Dayal Munda, MP, entrepreneur Anu Aga of Thermax Ltd and Madhav Gadgil of Agharkar Research Institute, Pune, have also been nominated to the new NAC that is expected to push for inclusive growth and social justice.

In its last incarnation during the first tenure of the United Progressive Alliance, the NAC became identified with signature social sector reforms such as introduction of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the Right to Information Act.

It is no secret that it is a brainchild of Congress party president, Sonia Gandhi Sonia. It is also informally called as UPA's Planning Commission for social agenda. On 23 March 2006, Sonia Gandhi had resigned from the post of chairmanship of the NAC after Office of profit controversy. On 29 March 2010, she was back as the chairperson of NAC.

Though it was initially meant to guide and implement in the Common Minimum Programme of the UPA-I, now it was asked to play its role to foster the social agenda of UPA-II. The NAC serves as an interface between the government and the Congress party.

That the other members of this council are nominated by the Prime Minister in consultation with the Chairperson, give credence to my argument – that’s change in the ‘mind set of the party leadership.” The funds for the functioning of this council are provided from the budgetary allocation for the Prime Minister's Office.

I wish to join those millions, who wish to hail Sonia and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, for overlooking claimants among political parties. Indeed, a good sign, as those who nominated not only high-profile and eminent personalities, but can guide the country impartially in designing and implementing the social agenda of the UPA-II to benefit those who need the help most.(22-06-2010)

సుందరం మనమందరం  – భండారు శ్రీనివాసరావు జర్నలిస్టు వృత్తి జీవితం తొలినాళ్ళలో నేను కలిసి తిరిగిన అనేకమంది మిత్రులు-తదనంతర కాలంలో స్వయంకృషితో ఎదిగి వాళ్ళు పనిచేస్తున్న పత్రికలకే ఎడిటర్లుగా పనిచేసి రిటైర్ అయ్యారు. ఉచ్చస్తితిలో వున్నప్పుడు వాళ్ళని కలుసుకోవాలంటే మహామహులకే దుర్లభంగా వుండేది. విజిటింగ్ కార్డు పంపి అనేకమంది వెయిట్ చేస్తున్న సమయాల్లో కూడా వాళ్ళు- నాతో గతకాలంలో గడిపిన రోజులు మరచిపోకుండా -నన్ను తమ సన్నిహిత వర్గంలోని వాడిగానే పరిగణించి ఆదరించేవారు.  విలేకరిగా వృత్తి జీవితం ప్రారంభించి విలేకరిగానే పదవీ విరమణ చేసినవాడిని నేను. నా బోటి వాళ్ళు ఈ వృత్తిలో ఎక్కువగా వుంటారు. అతికొద్దిమంది మాత్రమె తమ ప్రతిభతో పై మెట్టు ఎక్కగలుగుతారు. నాది ఒక రకంగా సర్కారు ఉద్యోగం కనుక ఎక్కవలసిన మెట్లు తక్కువే. ఎక్కగలిగిందీ తక్కువే. గోదావరిలో ఎన్ని నీళ్ళున్నా – మనం బిందె తీసుకువెడితే బిందెడు నీళ్ళు, చెంబు తీసుకువెడితే చెంబెడు నీళ్ళు – మన ప్రాప్తాన్నిబట్టి తెచ్చుకోగలుగుతామని మా పెద్దన్నయ్య భండారు పర్వతాలరావు గారు చెప్పిన విషయం గుర్తుంచుకోవడం వల్ల ఈ మెట్లెక్కే గొడవ నా మనసుకు ఎక్కలేదు. అయినా ఈనాటి లోకం పోకడ ఇందుకు విరుద్దం. పొజిషన్ ను బట్టి పలకరింపులు, స్తాయిని బట్టి సాన్నిహిత్యాలు, హోదాని బట్టి ఆహావోహోలు. కానీ నా అదృష్టం – నా మిత్రులెవ్వరు ఈ కోవలోకి రారు. అందుకే ఇన్నేళ్ళ తరవాత కూడా  వారు నాతొ ప్రవర్తించే తీరులో ఇసుమంత తేడా లేదు. ఈరోజు- జూన్ 17 వ తేదీన –హైదరాబాద్ ఎర్రగడ్డ హిందూ స్మశాన వాటికలో ఎక్స్ ప్రెస్  సుందరం అంత్యక్రియలకు వెళ్ళినప్పుడు పూర్వపు మిత్రులందరూ కలిసారు. వారిలో చాలా మంది విశ్రాంత జీవితం గడుపుతున్నారు. కొద్దిమంది ఇంకా వృత్తిలో కొనసాగుతున్నారు. మా మధ్య తిరిగిన సుందరాన్ని (సుందరం గారు అని మన్నింపుగా పేర్కొనకపోవడంపై ఎవరికయినా బాధ కలిగితే క్షంతవ్యుడిని ) విగత జీవుడిగా చితిపై చూస్తున్నప్పుడు మా అందరి మనస్సులు వికలమయ్యాయి. జర్నలిజంలో ఎంతో వున్నత స్తానానికి ఎదిగినా కూడా నాతో ఆయన ప్రవర్తన మునుపటిమాదిరిగానే వుండేది. ఎనభయ్యవ దశకానికి ముందు నేను రేడియోలోనూ, ఆయన ఆంద్ర పత్రికలోను పనిచేస్తూ వుండేవాళ్ళం.  శ్రీయుతులు జి కృష్ణ, ఆంధ్రపత్రిక ముక్కు శర్మ, ఈనాడు శాస్త్రి, పీటీఐ కృష్ణ, హిందూ రాజేంద్రప్రసాద్, లక్ష్మీపతి, పేట్రియాట్ ప్రభాకరరావు, క్రానికల్ సింహం,ఎక్స్ ప్రెస్ మురళీధర్, శ్రీకాంత్ విట్టల్, ప్రభ సలంద్ర (చావు గీతం), యుఎన్ఐ పార్థసారథి, పీటీఐ జమాల్ వంటి కీర్తిశేషులయిన వుద్దండులతో కలిసిమెలిసి తిరగగలిగే అదృష్టం నాకు దక్కింది. అలాగే, శ్రీయుతులు – సమాచార భారతి ఆదిరాజు వెంకటేశ్వర రావు, యుఎన్ఐ డి సీతారాం, ఈనాడు ఏబీకే ప్రసాద్, ఆంద్ర జ్యోతి వెంకట రావు, ఇన్నయ్య , హిందూ కేశవరావు, నగేష్, ఆంద్రప్రభ పొత్తూరి వెంకటేశ్వరరావు, జ్యోతి రామచంద్రమూర్తి, క్రానికల్ రబీంద్రనాధ్, పీ ఏ రామారావు, ,విశాలాంధ్ర శ్రీనివాసరెడ్డి, ప్రజాశక్తి వినయకుమార్, ఈనాడు శేఖర్, పాశం యాదగిరి, శ్రీధర్, కే వేణుగోపాల్, ఎన్ఐఎస్ కొండా లక్ష్మారెడ్డి, – ఒకరా ఇద్దరా జర్నలిజం లో కాకలు తీరిన అనేకమందితో చనువుగా మసలగలిగే అవకాశాన్ని నా రేడియో విలేకరిత్వం నాకు అందించింది. నిజానికి వీరిలో చాలామందితో నా సాన్నిహిత్యం – ‘గారు’ వంటి గౌరవ పద ప్రయోగాలతో ముడిపడివుండలేదు. చాలా చనువుగా పలకరించుకోగల సంబంధ బాంధవ్యాలు వుండేవి.మాలో చాలామందిమి, సంపాదకులను మినహాయిస్తే,   దాదాపు ప్రతి రోజు సెక్రెటేరియేట్ లోని ప్రెస్ రూం లో కలుసుకునేవాళ్ళం. పత్రికా సమావేశాలు లేనప్పుడు కొన్ని గంటలపాటు మా నడుమ ముచ్చట్లు సాగేవి. పెద్దా చిన్నా తేడా లేకుండా ఒక కుటుంబంలోని సభ్యులమాదిరిగా గడిపేవాళ్ళం. సుందరం గారు కనపడగానే ‘సుందరం మనమందరం’ అని ఏదో కవిత్వ ధోరణిలో పలకరించినా ఆయన  ఏమీ అనుకునేవాడుకాదు. పైగా నవ్వి వూరుకునేవాడు. మా ఇద్దరి నడుమా మరో బాదరాయణ సంబంధం వుండేది. గుజరాత్ గవర్నమెంటు వారి‘గిర్నార్’ స్కూటర్ ను మన రాష్ట్రంలో తొలిసారి ప్రవేసపెట్టినప్పుడు, మేమిద్దరం ఒకేరోజు, ఒకే డీలర్ దగ్గర కొన్నాము.  హైదరాబాదులో అమ్ముడుపోయిన గిర్నార్ స్కూటర్లే బహు తక్కువ. వాటిల్లో రెండింటికి మేమిద్దరమే ఓనర్లం. ఆ రోజుల్లో వెస్పా స్కూట ర్లకు పెద్ద గిరాకీ వుండేది. కానీ, కొనుక్కోవాలంటే ఎన్నో సంవత్సరాల పాటు వెయిట్ చేయాల్సివచ్చేది. అందుకే మరో మాట లేకుండా మేమిద్దరం గిర్నార్ స్కూటర్లు కొనుక్కున్నాము. అదీ ఏదో బ్యాంకు అధికారి జర్నలిష్టులమని అప్పివ్వబట్టి. అంత్యక్రియలు పూర్తయిన తరవాత సుందరం గారి పిల్లల్ని కలుసుకుని పరిచయం చేసుకున్నాను. వారి తండ్రి గారితో నా సాన్నిహిత్యం గురించి చెప్పాలనిపించినా అంత చనువు లేక మానుకున్నాను. జర్నలిస్టుల జీవితాలు ఇంతే. వారికి సమాజంలో ఎంతోమంది తెలుస్తుంటారు. కానీ తోటి జర్నలిస్టుల కుటుంబ సభ్యులతో  పరిచయాలకు ఆస్కారం చాలా తక్కువ. అందుకే, సుందరం గారు చనిపోయిన విషయం వెంటనే తెలిసికూడా ఆయన ఇంటికి వెళ్ళ లేకపోవడానికి ఇదే కారణం. ఆ ఇంట్లో ఆయన తప్ప నాకెవరు తెలవదు.ఒకవేళ వెళ్ళివున్నా,నేను తెలిసిన ఆ ‘ఒక్కరికి’ నేను వచ్చిన విషయం తెలియదు. ఇది మరో  విషాదం. (17-06-2010) NOTE: All the images in this blog are copy righted to their respective owners.

Strategy? Or showdown? - Bhandaru Srinivas Rao (I.I.S.)

The ongoing war-of-nerves among ruling Congress party members, indeed sending a wrong signal to people, that too on the eve of byelections to 12 assembly constituencies, which necessitated due to the resignation of 10 TRS and one each of TDP and BJP members protesting against the Centre’s refusal to carve out separate Telangana and instead constitute Justice BN Srikrishna Committee.

Today, people are perplexed with the behavior of the ruling Congress members, that too the so called seniors from the region, who are more vocal in digging their own party colleagues graves. Was it a clever strategy of anti-YSR group nail their pro-YSR counterparts? Or such ‘pressure’ tactics only meant to prevail upon the party high command not to consider accommodating the former CM’s scion and Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy with a plum post in future? (This is in the wake of rumors making rounds that he may as well be allowed to succeed D Srinivas as Pradesh Congress Committee chief, as the former's term is coming to an end next month)

Should one consider it as their ‘strategy’ to ‘finish’ pro-YSR group within the party? Or a show down with the party high command?

Whatever may be their ‘hidden’ agenda, it is not going do any good to the party – now or in future. Calling their own colleague ‘corrupt’ doesn’t augment anyway for their own ‘vote bank’ to sail with them in the coming polls. And, if the party high command, for some reason or the other, bow down to these pressure tactics, and direct Rosaiah to ‘drop’ allegedly corrupt Ponnala from the Cabinet, it proves more disastrous to the party and government.

Doesn’t the so called seniors of the region aware of these facts? How come they choose to don the role of “Bhasmasura” to wipe their own party from the state? Can they dare imagine of the party winning any future elections, leave alone bouncing back to power yet again in 2014?



What one fails to understand how come these seniors dare not raise their voice while YSR was alive and kicking? Weren’t they scared of his unassailable stature and his ‘hold’ with the party high command? Do they choose now as they find ‘chicken heart-type’ qualities in their own Chief Minister K Rosaiah as he has no control over them?

As far Rosaiah is concerned, he is proving beyond doubt of adopting ‘Chanakya’ neethi. Time and again he is reiterating that he is sitting in CM's gaddi at the behest of party high command. He admits that the ‘seat’ is too 'hot' and willing to vacate, if the party high command so directs. Thus far, Rosaiah ‘cleverly’ keeps his hands off on ongoing war-of-nerves among his own party colleagues. Not that he is ‘blind’ to the fact that such malicious campaign against his own Cabinet colleague only weaken his government, than serve any better. Yet, by leaving the decision on ‘disciplining members’ to the party high command, he establishes his ‘neutral stand’ amongst warring groups.

It is up to the party high command to decide whether such ‘neutral’ stand of Rosaiah will do any good to the party or not.
But for an average onlooker the ongoing ‘power struggle’ within the ruling clique reminds them of pre-1983 political scenario in the state. The ‘power struggle’ within the Congress appears to be making its main Opponent Telugu Desam party job much easier to win over the people. The Congress party could win 2004 and 2009 elections simply because of the ‘unity’ it displayed under the strong leadership of YSR. That YSR initiated welfare schemes to poor and needy might have further cemented the ‘faith’ of electorate in that party.

The TDP, which spearheaded the ‘corruption’ issue, especially attacking the envious ‘Jalayagnam’ project from the day it was unveiled, in fact failed to convince the electorate. Their ‘appeasing tactics’ of ‘direct money transfer’ scheme into beneficiaries accounts, if their party brought back to power, also failed to convince the electorate in 2009 elections.

But, if the ruling party members themselves admit that there are more skeletons in their cupboard and are willing to pull one after the other, then the electorate does't require any more proofs.

Now it’s up to the ruling party and its high command to take immediate ‘damage control’ measures to prevent further erosion of the party’s image in the eyes of Andhrites. It they do, and then the fears of pre-1983 may as well come true! (16-06-2010)

In a democratic society, any citizen can take part in any election any where.  That’s the right enshrined in our constitution.  Then, how come the separatist Telangana Rashtra Samiti and other students’ organizations like the Osmania University JAC and Kakatiya University JAC dare held out threats against those aspiring candidates who wanted to contest the bypolls which necessitated due to the resignation of 12 legislators protesting against the Centre’s decision to constitute Justice BN Srikrishna panel?

Such a demand is not only undemocratic and unlawful act and the government should not hesitate to book cases against those who indulge in holding out such threats. Instead, those who are demanding for bifurcation of the state can campaign in a peaceful manner to convince the electorate of the region to vote for those who toe the separate statehood line.  None can object to such a move. Yet, their campaign should not be provocative and attract legal action as such undemocratic moves only result in disturbing the peace in society.

With the announcement of the possible elections before August by none other than one of the Election Commissioners, the ruling Congress and its main rival, Telugu Desam Party, have already begun the process for candidates hunt.  Scores of aspiring candidates already forming queues before these two major party headquarters and engaged in hectic lobbying for ticket!  Contrary to this, the TRS and those who are fighting for separate statehood are only trying to scare the contestants.  They wanted all those who resigned en masse (10 of TRS and one each of TDP and BJP) on a directive from the T-JAC Chief Prof Kodandaram, only they should return to state Assembly uncontested.  Can such a demand be allowed in a democratic society like ours?

Prof Kodandaram is a respected teacher.  I feel, he is well versed with country’s democratic functioning and also of the contents of the Constitution.  He should discourage those militant elements who wanted to make such undemocratic demand and wants to pursue it further.  Otherwise, one bound to suspect that the TRS has no faith in Indian democracy and may attract the treatment that being meted out to other unlawful organizations and political parties.  Violence has no place in the society.  Every peace loving citizen should adhere to this.  As a citizen of this great nation, one enjoys the freedom to travel, live, breathe and enjoy life in which ever part of the country he chooses to.  None has the right to restrict movements of an individual based on regional chauvinism. 

What the TRS and those organizations which really wanted to accomplish their dream of separate statehood for Telangana should seriously concentrate and ensure return of all those who resigned for the cause in the forthcoming by-polls.  As far as the regional ‘sentiment’ is concerned, one has little faith in that argument.  This was based on the past experiences of TRS in elections.  Doubting Thomases  on Telangana ask; “if the sentiment is so strong, then why electorate are not supporting TRS at hustings?.  The TRS had only seen only erosion (numerically) in all elections it contested since 2004. 

Onus is on TRS now to change this belief among its baiters. It has a point or two to prove by retaining all the 10 seats  (remaining two belong to TDP and BJP) it had won in 2009.  It should put all its energies to impress upon the electorate in these constituencies to strengthen their hands to take the fight for separate statehood to its logical conclusion. If it retains all the 10 seats and also ensures victory for TDP and BJP candidates who also resigned along with other TRS MLAs and establish that the sentiment for separate statehood is strong, it shall send the right kind of message even to Srikrishna Panel make note of it and incorporate this fact while submission of its final report sometime during the year end. 

Time is ripe for polarization of electorate for the cause.  The ball is now back in TRS court and how it handles and sees all its nominees retain their seats is the look out of its most vocal leader K Chandrasekhara Rao.

 It’s his responsibility to best utilize this golden opportunity to disprove the argument of ‘Telangana is no more a myth, but set to become reality, sooner than later, if he ensures all electorate fall in line and help retain his nominees.”  

One only wish KCR and Prof Kodandaram control their tempers and show their maturity in understanding the democratic process and disprove their critics of what they are capable of.  Good luck to them! (( 09-06-2010 )

TRS violence ‘eclipse’ Mahanadu coverage!

Has the trouble that rocked the state following Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s “Odarpu Yatra” ‘eclipsed’ the deserved coverage to the two-day Mahanadu of Telugu Desam party?

It looks like so!  Telugu Desam party, which is considered as one of the major regional parties in India, and had a ‘major’ role to play in Indian politics, suffered worst due to media deviation on two incidents – Jagan’s arrest following trouble at Mahbubabad railway station and the Maoist blasting a train in West  Bengal  killing 80 persons.  Almost all the news channels of regional and national gave priority to these two incidents' coverage simultaneously, ignoring the importance that the TDP annual conclave indeed deserves.

Does the entire media in the country taken for a ride by a well-knit conspiracy hatched by the Congress and the separatist Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS)?  As far as the state Congress unit is concerned, it is a war like situation within the party as pro and anti-YSR groups clashes come in open.  Those who opposed to YSR had no courage to challenge him while he was alive.  Although, they used to air dissent note quite often, they were not taken seriously by the party high command as YSR enjoyed maximum support.  In fact, even the Opposition which hitherto used to blame a Congress-led government in the past of being ruled (read controlled) by Delhi leadership, had begun to accuse it was YSR who dictating terms to the party high command.  In other words, not only the main Opposition Telugu Desam, but also other parties in the state realized that YSR had become all powerful and worked towards his defeat ganging up in one form or the other during the last assembly elections held in 2009.

But, YSR, who established himself as ‘mass leader’ (may be after NTR) in Andhra politics could accept the Opposition parties united ‘platform’ to ensure his Congress party win second term in the state.  The TRS, which was born to fight for separate statehood, hobnobbed with the Congress in 2004 elections and later with the Opposition Telugu Desam Party under the banner of “Mahakutami” in 2009 elections, in a bid to improve its numerical strength in the state assembly. Ironically, it failed on both occasions.

But, the tragic death of a strong leader like YSR in chopper crash had come handy to the party which is fighting for separate statehood as well to the Opposition Telugu Desam, which is  ambitious to stage a come back.  But, the death of a strong leader like YSR had benefited the TRS more than the TDP as regional passions rocked almost all the major political parties.  Those, who stood like a rock in support of YSR, nip the separate statehood demand in the bud, slowly but steadily, came out in its support.  So has happened even in Telugu Desam and the party leadership had its compulsions in encouraging such a demand by its own members belonging to the region.

What has happened in the recent past to strengthen the cause is for every one of us to see.  The fast-unto death agitation by the TRS chief, the Centre’s initiative to begin the process for bifurcation with the Union Home Minister’s mid-night statement leading to KCR giving up his fast, and Chidambaram’s statement igniting fire in two other parts of the state – coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema – by integrationists, the unabated violence in the campuses of Osmania University (Hyderabad) and Kakatiya University (Warangal), all these developments helped to the advantage of TRS.  And, the Congress central leadership had to take the place for the continuance of political unrest in the state due to its short-sighted political initiatives. 

Since then the TRS spearheaded its violent movement, but restrained as the Congress constituted Justice BN Srikrishna Committee, giving an impression that it  had fulfilled its promises of beginning the process for state bifurcation by asking the panel to elicit view points of all stakeholders and submit its recommendations.  But, it would not like to leave an opportunity to create scare among the Central leadership on state bifurcation.  As part of that exercise, the TRS and its supportive organizations like T-JAC of Prof Kodandaram and the students JAC of OU and Kakatiya Universities, decided to derive maximum advantage of the Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s ‘Odarpu yatra’, in spite of his appeals not to see his visit to Warangal in political angle.

But, for TRS, the fear of the by-elections, which are scheduled to be held in next couple of months, become major concern and remain to be in news for some reason or the other.  The past experiences of ‘major set backs’ to that party in by-polls haunting TRS leadership like a shadow.  The party had no great hopes on getting a positive report from the ongoing Srikrishna panel.  This was evident from KCR’s veil threats of ‘civil war’  if the Committee submits negative report in December.  The recent Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s reported remarks on new states’ formation also become a major worrying factor to KCR and his party. The Prime Minister made it clear on the occasion of his government’s first anniversary that creation of smaller states is not in his party-led UPA coalition government's priorities.

Well, for whatever reasons, the TRS and its supporters might have chosen the path of confrontationist to prevent the Kadapa MP’s ‘Odarpu yatra’; it served their purpose for being in news yet again.  They proved that they indeed capable of creating a ‘civil war’ like situations.  At the same time, by knowingly or unknowingly also scored a ‘bonus’ point of pushing the main Opposition Telugu Desam from getting its due coverage on an important day like the party’s foundation day and its founder president N T Rama Rao’s birth day.

The same yard stick may be applied even in case of Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, who like his father, determined to build his career as strong ‘mass leader’ rather than count as one among many politicians sons.  Like his father, he understood that ‘credibility’ is the major factor in today’s politics to get people’s acceptance.  If his father chose the path and accomplished as ‘madama tippani neta’ (A man who will not go back on his promise), the young scion too appears gaining that acceptance.  His determination to go ahead with the “Odarpu Yatra’ in spite of the alleged party high command’s flat ‘no’ indeed helped the party more than it expected. 

If the state bifurcation issue has attained national importance with almost all major national channels running debates in their ‘prime time’ slots, so was Jaganmohan Reddy’s image. He now, has  become a national ‘hero’ for his dare-devil attempt as yesterday's incident let rest of the country’s population know how a committed leader he is to pay back the gratitude.(29-05-2010)

మౌంట్ అబూ గురించిన జ్ఞాపకాలు - భండారు శ్రీనివాసరావు

2003 లో ఒక రోజు.

అబూ రోడ్ చేరేసరికి ఉదయం ఏడున్నర.

బ్రహ్మ కుమారీలు ఏర్పాటు చేసిన సుమోలో మా ఆరుగురిని సామానుతో సహా మౌంట్ అబూ కి చేర్చారు. సుమారు యిరవై కిలోమీటర్లకు పైగా ఘాట్ రోడ్.  ఆరావళీ పర్వత పంక్తుల్లో మౌంట్ అబూ ఎత్తయిన శిఖరం అంటారు. శిఖరం అన్న మాటే గాని పైన అన్ని వసతులతో కూడిన ఒక చిన్నపాటి పట్టణమే వుంది. మాకు ఇచ్చిన గెస్ట్ హౌస్ చాలా బాగుంది. స్నానాలు ముగించుకుని బ్రేక్ ఫాస్ట్ చేయడానికి కేంటీన్ కి బయలుదేరాము. నిటారుగా నిర్మించిన సిమెంట్ రోడ్ పై నుంచి కిందికి దిగి మళ్ళీ పైకి ఎక్కాలి. డైనింగ్ హాల్ ఎంతో నీటుగా వుంది. పుంగనూర్ కి చెందిన శ్రీనివాస్ అనే కార్యకర్త స్వచ్చందంగా అంత దూరం నుంచి వచ్చి అక్కడ బ్రేక్ ఫాస్ట్ సర్వ్ చేసే విధులను నిర్వహిస్తున్నాడు. బ్రహ్మ కుమారీల ప్రధాన కార్య స్థానంలో పనిచేసేవారందరూ అలాటి వారే. ఎవరూ జీతాలు తీసుకోరు. బ్రేక్ ఫాస్ట్ లో దక్షిణాది వంటకాలు కూడా వుండడంతో మాకు ఎలాటి ఇబ్బంది ఎదురు కాలేదు. తరువాత మెల్లగా నడుచుకుంటూ ఆ కొండల మీద కలయ తిరిగాము. మబ్బులు తాకుతూ వెడుతున్న అనుభూతి. పురాణ సినిమాలలో నారదుడు గుర్తుకువచ్చాడు.

కాసేపు గదిలో సేదతీరామో లేదో మళ్ళీ భోజనాలకు పిలుపు. ఈసారి నార్త్ ఇండియా వంటకాలు. కాకపొతే పులిహార వడ్డించారు. తెలుగు వాళ్లమని పెరుగు స్పెషల్.

భోజనం ముగించుకుని మెట్లెక్కి శిఖరం అంచున ఫోటోలు దిగాము.

మధ్యాహ్నం నుంచి బ్రహ్మ కుమారీల సెషన్స్ మొదలయ్యాయి. బ్రదర్ శాంత కృష్ణ మెడిటేషన్ గురించీ, బ్రహ్మకుమారీల గురించీ వివరంగా చెప్పారు. మాలో కొంతమంది జర్నలిష్టులకు సహజసిద్దమయిన రీతిలో రెచ్చగొట్టే విధంగా ప్రశ్నలు వేసినా, ఆయన నిగ్రహం కోల్పోకుండా జవాబులు చెప్పారు.

మధ్యాహ్నం నుంచి ఎడతెరిపి లేకుండా వాన.

హైదరాబాదుకు చెందిన బ్రహ్మకుమారీల ప్రతినిధి సరళ, ఐఏఎస్ అధికారి శ్రీ మంగపతిరావు, రెవెన్యూశాఖలో పనిచేసిన శ్రీమతి నైనాదేవి, మా ఆవిడ నిర్మల   హైదరాబాదు నుంచి వచ్చిన బృందం లో వున్నారు. మా పని తరలి వచ్చిన మగ పెళ్లివాళ్ళ మాదిరిగావుంది.

శుక్రవారం

‘అంబర చుంబిత’ అన్న అల్లసానివారి పద్యం గుర్తుకు వచ్చింది.

మేము వుంటున్న జ్ఞాన సరోవర్ నుంచి సుమారు యిరవై కిలోమీటర్లు ఘాట్ రోడ్ లో పైకి వెడితే వచ్చే గురు  శిఖిరం మీద నిలబడ్డపుడు ఎవరికయినా ఈ పద్యపాదం స్ఫురించకమానదు.

ఆకాశం అంచుల్లో నిలబడ్డ అనుభూతి కలిగించే ఆ సుందర దృశ్యం అనిర్వచనీయం. ఎటుచూసినా తెల్లని పొగ మంచు. అడుగు దూరం అవతల వున్నది కూడా కనిపించని స్తితి. ఎదురుగా వున్న మనుషులను కూడా పోల్చుకోలేని పరిస్తితి.

అక్కడికి వెడుతున్నప్పుడు మా డ్రయివర్ బాబు ఆ పొగమంచులో ముందుకు వెళ్లడం కుదరదని వాహనాన్ని రోడ్డు పక్కన నిలిపేశాడు. ఉసూరుమనిపించింది. కానీ ఇంతలో హెడ్ లైట్లు వేసుకుని ఒక కారు ఎదుటినుంచి రావడంతో ఏమనుకున్నాడో కానీ ముందుకే నడిపించాడు. ముందు సీట్లో కూర్చున్న నాకు అడుగు ముందు ఏమివుందో కనిపించడం లేదు. అయినా డ్రయివరు బాబు మాత్రం ఎంతో చాకచక్యంగా నడుపుతూ మమ్మల్ని  పైకి చేర్చాడు. అప్పటికే అక్కడ చాలామంది వున్నారు. ఏదో మాట్లాడుకుంటూ పోకపోతే ఎదురుగా వచ్చేవారు డీకొట్టే ప్రమాదం వుంది. అందుకే అవసరం వున్నా లేకపోయినా గలగలా మాట్లాడుకుంటూ, నూట యాభయి రూపాయలుపెట్టి కొనుక్కున్న కాల్చిన మొక్కజొన్న కంకులు తింటూ   దాదాపు మూడువందల మెట్లెక్కి, గురు శిఖరం చేరుకున్నాము. అంత పొగమంచులో కూడా చిరుచెమట పట్టింది. ఆ శిఖరం మీద దత్తాత్రేయ ఆలయం వుంది. చాలా చిన్న గుడి. గుడి కంటే అక్కడ వేళ్ళాడదీసిన గంట పెద్దదిగా అనిపించింది.  ఆ గంట మోగిస్తే దాని ధ్వని లోయలో ప్రతిధ్వనించడం ఒక అనుభూతి. అక్కడ కొన్ని ఫోటోలు దిగాము కానీ ఆ దట్టమయిన పొగమంచులో ఆ ఫోటోలు ఎలావస్తాయో తెలియదు. అన్ని మెట్లు ఎక్కలేని వాళ్ళ కోసం డోలీలు వున్నాయి. నూటయిరవై రూపాయలు ఇస్తే పైకి తీసుకువెళ్ళి కిందకు తీసుకువస్తారు. దోవలో డ్రైవర్ బాబుని అడిగాము, చంద్రబాబునాయుడు ఎవరో తెలుసా అని. ‘ఆంధ్రా సీఎం’ అని చటుక్కున జవాబిచ్చాడు. అదే గుజరాత్ సీఎం ఎవరంటే ఉప రాష్ట్రపతి పేరు చెప్పాడు.

మేము వెళ్ళిన దోవలో రెండు లోయల నడుమ కట్టిన ఒక డాం కనిపించింది. మౌంట్ అబూ లో కొన్ని ప్రాంతాలు మాత్రమే బ్రహ్మకుమారీల అధీనంలో వున్నాయి. మిగిలిన ప్రాంతాల్లో ఆకాశవాణి, దూరదర్శన్, ఎయిర్ ఫోర్స్ స్టేషన్, రాజస్తాన్ టూరిజం కార్యాలయం వున్నాయి. గురు శిఖరానికి వెళ్ళే దారిలో పడి పన్నెండు చిన్న చిన్న ఊళ్లు, ఆవుల మందలూ వాటి కాపరులూ కానవచ్చారు. విచిత్రమేమిటంటే  వాళ్ళు మేమూ కూడా చలిదుస్తులు వేసుకోలేదు. పొగమంచులో చలిగా అనిపించదు. వెంట తీసుకువెళ్ళిన షాల్స్ కారులోనే వొదిలేసి తిరిగాము. కాకపొతే, గొడుగు తప్పనిసరి. ఎప్పుడు వాన పడుతుందో తెలవదు. వాన వచ్చిందో పొగమంచు పరార్.

కిందికి వచ్చి కేంటీన్ లో భోజనాలు చేశాము. పులిహార, రోటీలు, రసం, పెరుగు, మామిడి పండ్లు. శుక్రవారం కదా. మా ఆవిడకు పులుపు నిషిద్దం. అన్నంలో పాలూ పంచదార కలుపుకుని భోజనం ముగించింది.అక్కడ మాకు హైదరాబాదు

నుంచి వచ్చిన సత్యనారాయణ రెడ్డి, రాజేశ్వరరెడ్డి, శర్మ, సుబ్బారావు, ఆయన భార్య పరిచయం అయ్యారు.

మధ్యాహ్నం నాలుగ్గంటల సమయంలో కాస్తంత ఎండ పొడ. కానీ అది వేడిగా వుందో చల్లగా వుందో అనుమానమే.

గమ్మత్తుగా సాయంత్రానికి వాతావరణం హైదరాబాదులో మాదిరిగా మారిపోయింది.            

ఆరు గంటలకు అసలు సెషన్ మొదలు. మా అందరికీ బాడ్జీలు, ఇతర సమాచారం వున్న ఫోల్డర్లు ఇచ్చారు. విశాలంగా వున్న ఒక పచ్చిక బయలులో సమావేశం మొదలయింది. దేశంలోని అనేక ప్రాంతాల నుంచి వచ్చిన వాళ్లందరూ అక్కడ జమయ్యారు. ఆ ప్రదేశం ఎంతో అందంగా వుంది. తివాచీ పరచినట్టుగా పచ్చని పచ్చిక. ఎత్తయిన చెట్లు. ఎటుచూసినా రంగురంగుల పూలమొక్కలు. అకాడమీ ఆఫ్ బెటర్ వరల్డ్ కు చెందిన బ్రదర్ మోహన్ సింగ్హన్ ఒక విషయం చెప్పారు. కొన్నేళ్ళకు పూర్వం ఆ ప్రదేశం రాళ్ళు రప్పలతో, రక్కసి పొదలతో నిండి వుండేదట. నీటి సౌకర్యం ఏమాత్రం లేని ఆ రోజుల్లో నంజుడప్ప అనే ఆయన స్వచ్చందంగా ముందుకు వచ్చి ఆ ప్రాంతాన్ని సుందరంగా తీర్చిదిద్దే బాధ్యతను నెత్తికెత్తుకున్నాడు. చిన్న చిన్న మట్టి పాత్రలకు చిల్లులు పెట్టి, వాటికి దూది పెట్టి, నీళ్ళను నింపి ఒక్కొక్క మొక్కని తడుపుతూ, వాటినన్నిటినీ పసిపాపలమాదిరిగా సాకుతూ పోషించి పెంచాడట. అలా నాలుగయిదేళ్ళలోనే ఆయన ఆ ప్రాంతం రూపురేఖలను  మార్చివేశాడట. ఇది విన్న తరవాత పని పట్ల నంజుడప్ప అంకిత భావానికి జోహారు అర్పించకుండా వుండలేకపోయాము.

బ్రహ్మ కుమారీ సంస్త అధినేత్రులందరూ , రాజయోగి డాదీ మనోహర్ ఇంద్రాజీ తో సహా  ఆ సమావేశానికి వచ్చారు. ఆధ్యాత్మిక ప్రసంగాలు చేసారు. తరువాత మెడిటేషన్ హాలులో జ్యోతి ప్రజ్వలన కార్యక్రమం జరిగింది. మంగపతిరావు గారూ నేనూ కూడా జ్యోతులను వెలిగించాము. మీడియా ఇంచార్జి కరుణ ఆధ్వర్యంలో ఇది జరిగింది.

మధ్యాహ్నం వరకు కన్ను పొడుచుకున్నా కానరాని పొగమంచు. సాయంత్రం  ఏడవుతున్నా సూర్యాస్తమయం కాని స్తితి.మౌంట్ అబూలోని ఈ ప్రకృతి వైరుధ్యాన్ని మనస్సులో పదిల పరచుకుంటూ, మెడిటేషన్ హాలులో దాదీ రతన్ మొహినీజీ  హిందీలో చేసిన అనుగ్రహ భాషణాన్ని ఆలకించాము.

‘కర్మ బంధాలలో చిక్కుపోయిన ఆత్మ – తన తండ్రి అయిన పరమాత్మను  గుర్తించలేదన్నారు. దానికి ధ్యానం ఒక్కటే మార్గం అన్నారు. ఆధ్యాత్మిక మార్గం హేతువుని తిరస్కరిస్తుంది, అయితే అది హేతువుని అధిగమించి వెళ్ళగలదన్నారు’ దాదీజీ.

శనివారం ఉదయం

తెల్లవారుజామున నాలుగు గంటలకే లేచి- ధ్యాన మందిరానికి వెళ్ళాము. స్నానాలు చేసి శుచిగా రావాలని కానీ, పాద రక్షలు ధరించకూడదని కానీ నిబంధనలేమీ లేవు. మందిరంలో ఒక బ్రహ్మ కుమారి తెల్లని దుస్తుల్లో సోఫా మీద ధ్యాన ముద్రలో వుంది. ప్రశాంతమయిన వాతావరణంలో – ఎక్కడ అమర్చారో తెలియని స్పీకర్ల నుంచి మెల్లగా ఒక పాట వినబడుతోంది. పాట పూర్తీ కాగానే బ్రహ్మ కుమారి సమ్మోహన స్వరంతో మాట్లాడడం మొదలుపెట్టారు. మధుర ఘడి యలుగా వారు పేర్కొనే ఆ సుప్రభాత వేళలో మెడిటేషన్ చేయడం కొత్త అనుభూతి. కానీ మనస్సు కోతి కదా. దాని వాసనలు దానివి. అందరూ కళ్ళు మూసుకుని ధ్యానం చేస్తుంటే – నేను మాత్రం ఆ వాతావరణాన్నీ అక్కడి మనుషులనూ పరిశీలించడంలో మునిగిపోయాను. అరగంటలో ఆ కార్యక్రమం ముగిసింది. అంతా నిశ్శబ్దంగా బయటకు వచ్చారు. అందరిలో ఒక రకమయిన ప్రశాంతత. నిజంగా ధ్యానం లో ఏదయినా వుందా?

మరునాడు మౌంట్ అబూ నుంచి కిందికి దిగాము. అక్కడ బ్రహ్మ కుమారీలకు ఒక బ్రహ్మాండమయిన సమావేస మందిరం వుంది. దాదాపు లక్షమంది సౌకర్యంగా కూర్చుని ప్రసంగాలు వినడానికి, కార్యక్రమాలు తిలకించడానికీ వీలుగా దానికి రూపకల్పన చేసిన తీరు అద్భుతంగా వుంది. అంత పెద్ద హాలులో ఎక్కడా స్తంభాలు లేకుండా మందిరం పైకప్పు నిర్మించారు. వేదికకు సుదూరంగా కూర్చున్నవారికి కూడా స్పుటంగా వినగలిగేలా అత్యాదునికమయిన లౌడ్ స్పీకర్లను అమర్చారు. నిర్మాణ కౌశలానికి ఒక మచ్చు తునకగా పరిగణించాల్సిన ఈ సుందర మందిరం దేశానికి బ్రహ్మ కుమారీల భిక్షే.
