‘పెద్దయ్యాక ఏమవుదామనుకుంటున్నావు?’  అనేది చిన్నప్పుడు స్కూల్లో అడిగే ప్రశ్న.

‘తెలుగు మాస్టారు’ ఠకీమని సమాధానం.

ప్రశ్న అడిగిన లెక్కల మాస్టారుకి ఎక్కడ కాలాలో అక్కడే కాలేది. తరువాత ఏదో తప్పువెతికి పట్టుకోవడం, చెయ్యి చాపమనడం, చాచిన చేతిని తిరగేయించడం,  దానిమీద డష్టరు తిరగేయడం - అది వేరే కధ.

తమదగ్గర  చదువుకునే పిల్లల్లో ఐ.ఏ.ఎస్. లు ఎంతమంది అవుతారన్నది వారికొచ్చిన  డౌటేహం కావచ్చు. వాళ్ళల్లో రాజకీయనాయకులు, జర్నలిస్టులు కొంతమంది అయినా కాకపోతారా అనే నమ్మకం కావచ్చు. అందుకే కాబోలు,  పిల్లలకు   వక్తృత్వపోటీలు పెట్టి, ‘కలం గొప్పదా? కత్తి గొప్పదా?’ – ‘అణ్వస్త్రాలు అవసరమా? కాదా?’ అని అనుకూలంగా ప్రతికూలంగా రెండు విధాలుగా చెప్పించేవారు. అప్పుడర్ధంయ్యేది కాదు కానీ ఇప్పుడు టీవీ చర్చలు చూస్తుంటే నెమ్మది నెమ్మదిగా తత్వం బోధపడుతోంది.

‘నరం లేని నాలుక ఏవిదంగానయినా మాట్లాడుతుందంటారు చూడండి. అలా రాజకీయ నాయకులు ‘మొన్న ఏం మాట్లాడాం, నిన్న ఏం చెప్పాం’ అన్న దానితో నిమిత్తం లేకుండా ఈరోజు చెప్పిందే ఫైనల్ అన్న పద్ధతిలో  బల్లగుద్ది వాదిస్తున్న విధం చూస్తుంటే రాజకీయాల్లో సోషలిజం, కమ్యూనిజం, క్యాపిటలిజం   కాకరకాయా ఏమీలేదు వొట్టి అవకాశవాదం తప్ప అనిపిస్తే ఆశ్చర్యపోవాల్సింది ఏమీ వుండదు.

‘మా నాన్నవల్ల ఏర్పడ్డ ప్రభుత్వాన్ని కూలగొట్టడం నామతం కాదు,  అభిమతం కాదు, కాదెంతమాత్రం కానే  కాదం’టూ ఎక్కడలేని ధర్మపన్నాలు  వల్లించి ఆ తరువాత అనతికాలంలోనే  పోటీ పార్టీ పెట్టి సొంతపార్టీకి చిల్లి పెడుతున్న విధం చూస్తుంటే-  రెండు నాలికలతో  మాట్లాడడానికి  చిన్నప్పుడే స్కూల్లో యెందుకు ట్రైనింగ్ ఇచ్చారో అర్ధం కావడం లేదా?

‘అవినీతిలో కూరుకుపోయిన కాంగ్రెస్ నాయకులను పంచెలూడతీసి తరిమికొడతాం!’ అంటూ పొడుగుపాటి డైలాగులు అలవోకగా జనం మీదకు వొదులుతూ, పార్టీ పెట్టిన  తొమ్మిదిమాసాల్లోనే అధికార పీఠం ఎక్కిన  ఎన్టీయార్ రికార్డుని బద్దలుకొట్టేసి,   రాజ్యాధికారంలోకి వద్దామనుకున్న కలలు కాస్తా   పార్టీ పారాణి ఆరకముందే కల్లలైపోవడంతో, ఇక  విధిలేక  ఆ కాంగ్రెస్ పంచనే చేరి, కేంద్రమంత్రి పదవిలో విదేశాల్లో  సేదతీరుతూ, తీరిగ్గా  సోనియా భజన చేస్తున్న వైఖరి చూస్తుంటే - రెండు నాలికలతో  మాట్లాడడానికి  చిన్నప్పుడు స్కూల్లో యెందుకు ట్రైనింగ్ ఇచ్చారో అర్ధం కావడం లేదా?

‘హెలికాప్టర్ దుర్ఘటనలో వైఎస్సార్ చనిపోయినప్పుడు, పట్టు చీరెల అంచులతో, ఖాదీ ఉత్తరీయాలతో కళ్ళు వొత్తుకుంటూ బుల్లితెరలమీద బారులుతీరి ‘అంతటి నాయకుడు ఇంతకు ముందు పుట్టలేదు ఇకముందు పుట్టడు’ అంటూ విలపించిన ఆయన  మంత్రివర్గ సహచరులే  ఇప్పుడు పల్లవి మార్చి ‘అవినీతిలో వైఎస్ ను మించినవాడు లేడం’టూ వైనవైనాలుగా శాపనార్ధాలు పెడుతున్న వైనం గమనిస్తుంటే - రెండు నాలికలతో  మాట్లాడడానికి  చిన్నప్పుడు స్కూల్లో యెందుకు ట్రైనింగ్ ఇచ్చారో అర్ధం కావడం లేదా?

‘తుది శ్వాస విడిచేవరకు తాత స్థాపించిన పార్టీలోనే వుంటానంటూ, ప్రత్యర్ధి పార్టీల ఫ్లేక్సీల్లో అభిమానుల పేరుతొ తన ఫోటోలు పెడుతుంటే మిన్నకుండిపోయి ముసిముసి నవ్వులు నవ్వడం చూస్తుంటే - రెండు నాలికలతో  మాట్లాడడానికి  చిన్నప్పుడు స్కూల్లో యెందుకు ట్రైనింగ్ ఇచ్చారో అర్ధం కావడం లేదా?

‘అల్లుడా రమ్మని పిల్లనిచ్చిన  మామ పిలిచి పార్టీ అందలం ఎక్కిస్తే, పార్టీని బతికించే నెపంతో పార్టీ సంస్తాపకుడి అంతాన్నే కళ్ళారాచూసి, ఇప్పడు మళ్ళీ పార్టీ పునరుద్దానానికి ఆ కీర్తిశేషుడి పేరునే వాడుకుంటూ, దానిపై పేటెంటు రైటు తమదే అంటూ వాడవాడలా  వూరేగుతున్న విపరీతాన్ని చూస్తున్నప్పుడు - రెండు నాలికలతో  మాట్లాడడానికి  చిన్నప్పుడు స్కూల్లో యెందుకు ట్రైనింగ్ ఇచ్చారో అర్ధం కావడం లేదా?

పార్టీలు, వ్యక్తుల భజనకోసం పెట్టిన టీవీ చానళ్ళలో పనిచేస్తూ, జీతాలకోసమో, హోదాలకోసమో వేరే చానళ్ళలో చేరి  పొగిడిన నోళ్లతోనే తెగుడుతున్న విధానాలను పరికిస్తుంటే - రెండు నాలికలతో  మాట్లాడడానికి  చిన్నప్పుడు స్కూల్లో యెందుకు ట్రైనింగ్ ఇచ్చారో అర్ధం కావడం లేదా?

ఇలాటి  చద్మ వేషధారుల, ఆషాఢభూతుల లీలలు చూపించి, వారి అసలు రూపాలను, స్వరూపాలను చూపించే విధంగా ఏ టీవీ వారయినా పుణ్యం కట్టుకుని, ‘అప్పుడు – ఇప్పుడు’ అనే కార్యక్రమం ప్రసారం చేస్తే యెంత బాగుంటుందో !

What India has gained from three-day visit of US President Barrack Obama? That’s the question now seems every one asking. Skeptics continue to accuse that Obama walked away ensuing 50,000 jobs back home and demanding Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to spell out the list of agreements that have been signed between the two largest democracies benefiting us.

But, I as a commoner feel India got more than what it expected. That’s the warmth and affection from world’s powerful nation’s head. The very statement of Obama that India no more can be called an emerging economic power, but already emerged, itself is the biggest compliment that every Indian feel to receive. This apart, assuring US support to India to fulfill it’s to dream of a permanent seat United Nations Security Council, is another immeasurable ‘gift’ soon after Diwali. Still many critics may say what is so great about becoming UNSC member? Well that’s the rare honor to feel we too have accomplished a role to play alongside other developed nations for promotion of international peace. Yes, thus far, it is most admired and envied institutional bodies in the world.

Having said that these two gains, India could also achieve another major goal of neutralizing our most envious neighbor China, which, now in fact, has agreed to support our claim for a permanent seat in UNSC as it too recognizes us as ‘emerged economic power’ in the world. What more one can expect from US President’s trip?

What most impressed me as an Indian is of Obama couple’s warmth towards whomever they met and interacted during their visit. None of the US Presidents in the past have shown such warmth towards their Indian counterparts. Was it due to Obama being an African American, or a white American like Clinton or Bush?

True back home, Obama too has problems aplenty. He made no bones of that. That’s another factor which really impressed me most. I am sure millions of my brethren in this country too might felt the same way when he bluntly said; “I too have to reply to my people as there is mounting criticism over my visit to India. Tomorrow when I return, I can proudly say that my visit to India help generate 50,000 job opportunities.”

Undoubtedly, Obama, unlike his predecessors, who visited India, appears to have done homework to perfection. He floored doubting Thomases in India over US stand on Pakistan, while addressing the Joint Parliament session a day before he left the shores to Indonesia. His explicit remarks, of course with a regret, that Pakistan unfortunately allowing its soil to be used by the terrorists who creating havoc elsewhere in the world surmises Indian sentiments. Perhaps, may not to the extent that one expected of calling or declaring our neighbors a ‘rogue’ or ‘terror’ state. That’s another eloquent high quality diplomacy characteristic which indeed floored almost all Indian politicians, barring the Left leaders who had no other option but to search week-ends just for heck of it.

US President’s categorical assurance to look into several issues, including that of “visas”, ‘outsourcing’ and ‘turban’ should be taken into right perspective as we could for the first time in history come across a honest man to do future business and further concretize our relations.

That Obama has done greater homework to understand Indian psyche is also evident from his in-depth knowledge of Mahatma Gandhi, whom we adore as ‘Father of the Nation”, and also of our cultures and ethos. His amazing mention of Panchatantra, which many our present day politicians might have bother to know, and other aspects like saying ‘Jai Hind’ at the end of speech, indeed were great acts to perfection.

He time and again reiterated describing US and India as largest democracies in the world and his keenness to work together for benefit of world community. As far his passing comment on Mynmar should not be viewed seriously as India’s foreign policy is not to ‘poke its nose’ into their neighbors internal problems. Even on Kashmir issue, Obama appears to have understood the complexity of the issue which tagged on with emotions, chose to restrain him tactfully.

Thus far, the overall visit of Obama to India was more than fruitful. India bound to benefit with its new-found US friendship and so is US. I wish to join chorus of those millions of pessimists to say Jai ho Obama.(10-11-2010)

My experiences in America - 1   – Bhandaru Srinivasarao


It was a bright and sunny morning when we left Seattle to spend some time on the Oregon coast. We took the Interstate #5 and traffic was light on account of it being a week day. I have seen the Pacific Ocean a while ago when I visited the US back in 2003. It was in sunny California and I longed to see the ocean once more.

The trip was uneventful until we approached the coastline. The entire scenery transformed in front of our eyes. On one side is the largest ocean in the World. On the other side is a road that meanders along the coast offering scenic vistas everywhere we look. As the road races along with coast, the vast ocean played hide and seek with us. It took almost six hours from Seattle to reach the Depoe Bay resort in Oregon State.

The vacation home which was booked online is a sprawling mansion with five bed rooms, self contained kitchen etc. There was no one at the vacation home to greet us. Based on the instructions given to us, we searched for a lock box near the garage, entered a code number and lo behold – we had the keys. We parked the car in the garage and were pleasantly surprised to see how homely the house was. It was neat and tidy. The kitchen was well stocked and the bedrooms were spacious with plenty of linens to spare.

 We had a pleasant surprise with the jetted tub on the upper floor patio. After spending two hours in the hot tub, we were relieved of the travel strain. It was a memorable experience to sit in the gushing waters as the warm water jets gently massaged the sore muscles. Renewed and replenished, we set off for a quick walk to the Depoe Bay viewpoint which was one block away from our vacation home.

I have studied in my childhood that the Pacific is the most peaceful among all oceans. But I was amused when I saw a notice board warning – “Don’t cross this line. There is every possibility of sudden waves engulfing the shore”. I was told that authorities are putting up such caution signs in the back drop of tsunamis which devastated South East Asia in 2004.

There were other coastal cities nearby – Florence, Newport and Lincoln City. We went round all these areas during our stay. We spent a lot of time in the Oregon state aquarium. The underwater aquarium featured sharks, dolphins and other exotic sea animals and we enjoyed watching them at close distance.

 The special affect at the aquarium was the giant anaconda – a beautiful 12 foot anaconda that was, thankfully in an unbreakable glass enclosure.

At Lincoln City, we came across another surprise. Good things come in small packages is a cliché we heard a lot of times. And it proved true when we saw the World’s shortest river. It was amusing to watch World’s shortest river joining the world’s largest ocean that is Pacific. The river’s length is just 440 feet and it originates in a small forest across the road adjoining the ocean.

 Another interesting observation worth noting is that we can actually witness the differences in temperatures between the river and the ocean. The river was shallow and warm while the ocean was deep and cold.

We then headed down the coast to go visit Cannon Beach near the city of Seaside. The beach is famous for the Haystack rock that is a big rock close to the coast. Generally the rock is surrounded by sea waters. We got lucky since due to the low tides, the waters around the rock receded enough for us to walk right to its base. The Haystack rock is used as a preservation point for seagulls and other sea birds. We could see hundreds of birds perched on the rock.

There were hundreds of tourists on the beach enjoying the beach with their families. Children were busy either flying kites or making sand castles. After spending some time on the beach and taking some pictures, we commenced our journey back to Seattle.
