I am rather amazed that Indian media is unwilling to learn lessons from the past and reluctant to draw their own self-regulatory methods to restrain from overstretching their brief. This was evident from the recent ongoing tennis star Sania’s marriage with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.
Should such an attention be paid to a star’s personal life? After all, she is a human and she had every right to choose her partner? If she is willing and knew well of her partner’s past personal life, who’s the media to question? Who gave the media right to park themselves near house days together and cause embarrassment as well inconvenience to her family members? Does it also cause inconvenience to those living next door of the star?
If this is not nauseating of media then what else is? Till recently, I though it was only the regional media, which shows over enthusiasm as neither staff were trained well or known of their limitations. But, what happened to the so called national media? How come they become so irresponsible? Aren’t they entrenching into the human rights of Sania?
Well, if Shoaib has indeed violated and any religious marriage acts, law can take its own course. Police, Courts and religious heads can help solve the problem. As a media, we have to restrain ourselves while covering such events which are too personal. As long as Shoaib is proved legally guilty, what right the Media has to disturb his peace. Similarly, when Sania, time again reiterates that she was well aware of the Shoaib and Ayesha, affair, besides her entire family, who the hell Media to poke their noses?
The City Police had taken cognizance of the FIR filed by Ayesha, alleged first wife of Shoaib, whom the latter apparently married over ‘phone’. Now, Ayesha and her parents wanted Shoaib to give first divorce and go ahead wedlock with Sania. And, Shoaib claims that he had already given ‘Talak’ over phone. All this looks very complicated and only the religious heads can clarify and give guidance, while the law can its own course as set guidelines in the Religious Marriage Rule Book.
Whether Sania and Shoaib determined to go ahead with their marriage (or Nikah) on set April 15 or not are their look out and the legal agencies botheration. The Media has no role, whatsoever to play, except remain as a ‘watch dog’ and report the developments as they unfold. As a journalist, that’s the way I feel. Till that time, none of my colleagues in the visual and print media has right to pitch their camps anywhere near Sania’s house and create inconvenience not only to her family, but to those who are living nearby.
As far as two individuals marriage is concerned there is no great investigation is required as facts are clear for everyone to see. Ayesha, the alleged first wife of Shoaib feels ‘cheated’ or ‘duped’ by the latter and wanted justice to be done. She has already knocked the doors of ‘justice’ by filing a police complaint. Contrary to this, Shoaib claims that he is innocent and dragged into the controversy with ulterior motives. To cap it all, Sania boasts that she and her family are well aware of Shoaib-Ayesha affair and they see no hanky-panky in it. Thus far, the problem lies between Shoaib and Ayesha and both of them have to prove they are not guilty. As far as Sania is concerned, knowing well about the earlier affair of his new found love, she decided to marry.
Can media writings or overenthusiastic acts help prevent scheduled Sania-Shoaib wedding on April 15 or any other date they fixed so? Certainly, not! Only, if the police find some prima facie and the judiciary intervenes, only then the marriage can be postponed or deferred for some more time.
Hence, I prey for better wisdom prevail on my own medi -dog’, they should better concentrate more on issues pertaining to people’s day-to-day problems, rather than get indulged in unwarranted issues like Sania-Shoaib marriage. Their over indulgence in the issue, in fact, had also drawn the two governments – India and Pakistan – which are already under great amount of strain.
If the media in our country failed to change its professional approach, then I am scared, one day a strong government at the Centre may crack a whip.(07--4-2010)
